Balzan move on by easily defeating St Andrews 5 -1

24th January 2016 – Balzan found no difficulty in beating bottom-placed St Andrews 5-1, at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Balzan took the lead on the 23rd minute. when off a cross by Steve Bezzina, Alfred Effiong served ALAN DA SILVA SOUZA who in turn managed to beat goalkeeper Jake Galea, with the ball finishing into the top corner of the net.

On the 29th minute, Da Silva Souza dribbled past Bon Won Che and quickly released Calcado whose shot was tipped off into a corner by the goalkeeper.

From the resulting corner taken by Pedro Calcado, St Andrews defenders failed to clear the ball and LYDON MICALLEF took the opportunity to finish the ball home.

During the second half, Balzan continued to sustain their dominance and on the 54th minute ALFRED EFFIONG connected a good pass by Calcado and dribbled his way into the area before beating goalkeeper Galea with a firm drive.

Five minutes later, Balzan scored their fourth goal when Da Silva Souza served PEDRO CALCADO who managed to beat Galea with a powerful shot.

On the 63rd minute, St Andrew’s managed to pull a goal back when Francis Onwudinjo was brought down in the area by Justin Grioli and JOSEPH FARRUGIA converted the resultant penalty.

But Balzan kept going on and on the 76th minute they increased the score, when in a swift counterattack LYDON MICALLEF broke free and chipped the ball over Galea.

In time added on Samir Arab was unlucky not to put his name on the score sheet as his shot hit the post.
