Balzan managed to win 1 – 0 against St Andrews in a hard fought game

Saturday 2nd April 2016 : Needing a win to keep their hopes for a European football spot, Balzan struggled to beat a determined St Andrews side with an odd goal.

Balzan while still having Ryan Fenech and Bojan Kaljevic injured, had also suspended Pedro Calcado missing. On the other hand St Andrews had missing Eloy Edu  Nkene also suspended.

After a quiet start where most of the play was held in midfield, on the 11th minute Balzan had the first attempt at goal when Alfred Effoing tested goalkeeper Jake Galea with a header after connecting a Justin Grioli cross, but his shot was well saved.

Past the half hour mark, following a corner taken by Justin Grioli, a scissor-kick from Effiong  was deflected by a defender for another corner.

After the break, Balzan took the initiative but still found it hard to penetrate the St Andrews defence. On the other hand St Andrews operated with fast counter attacks.

On the hour, from a corner taken by Joseph Farrugia, an effort by Bong Won Che was blocked  by a defender finishing into a corner.

Balzan managed to break the deadlock in the 70th minute when, following a cross by Justin Grioli, Lydon Micallef headed the ball into ALEKSANDAR VUJACIC’s path who in turn managed to beat the goalkeeper with another header.

A minute later, goalkeeper Ivan Janjusevic made a fine save over an attempt from close-range by Jonatan Perez Cuestra after being set by Salomon Wisdom.

On the other side, substitute Alan da Silva Souza could have doubled the score when, in the last minutes of the game, he exchanged the ball with Effiong before attempting to goal but goalkeeper Jake Galea was there to save the danger.
