Saturday 16th April 2016 : Balzan suffered a fatal blow in their bid for the championship as they lost to contenders Hibernians and are now 5 points behind them and Valletta, who still have a game in hand. Hibernians were the better team and deserved to win this game.
Balzan created the first chance to goal when on the 3rd minute goalkeeper Justin Harber had to make a fine save of an attempt by Alfred Effiong.
Hibernians reacted and on the 19th minute they took the lead. After a mishap in the Balzan midfield, Gilmar Da Silva Ribero took advantage and served JORGE DA SILVA PEREIRA who in turn dribbled past a defender and managed to beat goalkeeper Ivan Janjusevic with a curling shot.
Hibernians insisted and on the 23rd minute Janjusevic made a good save over an attempt by Rodolfo Soares.
However on the 27th minute Hibernians doubled the score. While Balzan protested for a penalty on Elkin Serrano Valero and the referee waved play on, from an ensuing counterattack, Gilmar Da Silva Ribeiro dribbled past a defender but his shot was parialy save by Janjusevic. From the rebound JORGE SILVA SANTOS dashed in and shot the ball into the back of the net.
Two minutes from halftime Balzan had a good chance to reduce the score when his shot from an acute angle managed to beat goalkeeper Haber but Marcelo Dias was providential, clearing the ball from the fatal line.
In the second half Balzan came out better but Hibernians kept their composure and gave them no space where to manoeuvre.
On the hour Hibernians made sure of the three points by scoring their third goal. Following a cross by Clayton Failla, which was punched away by Janjusevic, JORGE SANTOS SILVA took the rebound and placed the ball at the back of the net with a back-heel shot.
Three goals down Balzan put everything on the attack. Immediately after the restart Justin Haber was forced to make a good save to corner over a shot by Pedro Calcado.
On the 80th minute, Gilmar Da Silva Riberio failed in his attempt as, from an ideal position, his shot finished wide.
Four minutes from time Balzan pulled one back thanks to a JUSTIN GRIOLI’s powerful drive from a distance giving Justin Haber no chance to save.
