Balzan kept their unbeaten record as they drew against Tarxien Rainbows in a dramatic way.

1st March 2016 – A goal by Paul Fenech, in added time, was the climax of this game as Tarxien R were heading to stop the unbeaten track of Balzan.

For this match Balzan welcomed back, from suspension, Pedro Calcado and Samir Arab but Ryan Fenech, Alan Da Silva Souza and Aleksandar Vujacic were missing injured. On the other side Tarxien had Carlos Menendez Hevia missing but welcomed back Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos, after serving a suspension by the club.

Balzan came out in full force searching for an early goal while Tarxien opted to defend and operate with swift counter attacks. On the 12th minute Balzan took the lead. Pedro Calcado sent a low cross which was connected well by Lydon Micallef, immediately he served ALFRED EFFIONG who in turn acrobatically fired the ball past Tarxien goalkeeper Andrea Cassar.

Balzan insisted and goalkeeper Cassar denied them on two occasions with fine saves. On the 16th minute he saved well on a free-kick taken by Pedro Calcado and then blocked the ensuing rebound. On the 33rd minute he was there again to save over another attempt by Alfred Effiong.

Balzan kept pressure on the Tarxien defence with continuous attacks, however a minute from half time Tarxien equalized. Balzan goalkeeper Ivan Janjusevic was surprised with a direct free-kick taken by JAOA PEDRO OLIVEIRA SANTOS which finished into the top corner of the net.

In the second half Balzan came out more aggressive. In the 62nd minute Cassar paired, with difficulty, a low drive by Lydon Micallef. Three minutes later a direct free-kick by Pedro Calcado finished just over the crossbar.

In the 79th minute, against the way of play, Tarxien forged ahead when, in a very swift counter attack, Luke Montebello served ALEX NILSSON and the latter’s curved shot gave Ivan Janjusevic no chance.

Balzan reacted and continue pressing to get something from this match. In the last minute of the normal time a free-kick taken by Calcado finished just over the bar, after being deflected by Triston Caruana. A minute into the added time, Alex Da Paixao Alves denied Balzan the equalizer by blocking a strong shot from close range by Lydon Micallef. Four minutes into the added time Samir Arab and Alex Da Paixao Alves were sent off by the referee, for an argument they had between themselves.

However two minutes later when the game seemed to be going to Tarxien’s way, from an insidious cross by PAUL FENECH the ball finished in the back of the net, with the goalkeeper beaten.
