Saturday 9th May 2016 – Balzan had to go into extra-time to beat Pembroke 3 – 1, after the game finished 1 -1. They will now be facing Sliema Wanderers in this year’s FA Trophy final.
In a pleasant and contested game the two teams shared the exchanges with Pembroke taking the lead during the first half and Balzan equalising in the second half, forcing the game to go into extra time. In the extra time, Balzan, scored another two goals to secure a place in the final for the first time in the history of the club.
Things looked tough on Balzan as on the 32nd minute they found themselves a goal behind when Siraj Arab served ARIEL LAUDISI, who filtered his way into the box and managed to beat Balzan goalkeeper Ivan Janjusevic, as he came face to face with him.
Balzan were distressed and they almost conceded a second goal, during the added time, when Alex Cini picked Gustavo Villalobos inside the are but his shot was parried away by Janujsevic.
In the second half, Balzan came out better. They dominated much of the proceedings as they looked in getting back into the game.
Five minutes into the second half, Alan Da Silva Sousa sent an inviting pass to Bojan Kaljevic but the latter missed the target from an ideal position.
In the 68th minute, Zoran Levnaic missed a golden opportunity to double the score when he headed wide, after connecting a Manolito Micallef’s corner-kick.
In the 76th minute, Balzan came close to equalise when a Da Silva Souza’s powerful drive came off the bar.
On the 80th minute, Balzan finally equalised. Mario Muscat partially saved a direct free-kick taken by pedro Calcado on the right but in came ALAN DA SILVA SOUZA who finished home the rebound, sending the game into extra time.
During the extra time Balzan took the initiative and in the 98th minut ethey took the lead. Alfred Effiong sent a calibrated cross towards BOJAN KALJEVIC who headed past Mario Muscat to send the Balzan fans into raptures.
Pembroke reacted but it was Balzan who added a third goal a minute from time. In another fast break Alfred Effiong was floored in the box, with the referee awarding a penalty. From the spot PEDRO CALCADO did not fail to transform.
