Balzan ended their Premier League campaign with a draw of 1-1 in the derby against Birkirkara

Friday 29th April 2016 – Balzan FC ended 4th place in the final classification of the Premier League 2015/2016 after finishing their commitments in a draw of 1-1 against neighbours Birkirkara FC.

Although Birkirkara were the better team for most of the game they only equalised late in the game through a late goal by Ryan Camenzuli, after an unfortunate own goal by Cain Attard which gave Balzan the lead.

In the first half most of the play was held in midfield and there were very few scoring chances.

In the 15th minute, Birkirkara went close but Kurt Zammit’s close-range effort was easily saved by Balzan’s goalkeeper Christian Cassar.

In the 27th minute, on the other side Balzan striker Alfred Effiong made his way into the box but his shot went wide.

In the second half Birkirkara came out better and started dictating the game. Balzan defending well for long stretches and gave no space where Birkirkara strikers could manoeuvre.

In the 63rd minute, Christian Cassar made a good save over a rising shot by Vito Plut, after making his way into the box and coming face to face with him.

Few seconds later, Balzan goalkeeper made another spectacular save, pushing away a dangerous effort by Ryan Camenzuli, who had just came in for Kurt Zammit.

In the 71st minute, Balzan had a good scoring chance when Pedro Calcado set Aleksandar Vujacic, but the striker’s weak effort was blocked by goalkeeper Miroslav Kopric.

In the 79th minute, Balzan took the lead when following a cross by Lydon Micallef from the left, the goalkeeper was unlucky to concede a goal as his fellow defender Cain Attard committed an own goal, heading the ball onto his own net, in a bid to clear to safety.

Birkirkara reacted immediately . Finally with only nine minutes to go, RYAN CAMENZULI equalised with a firm shot from outside the box.
