Balzan defeated Floriana 2 – 0 and extended their positive run in the Premier League

5th March 2016 : In the direct encounter between Balzan and Floriana, Balzan emerged as sure winners with a goal in each half. Missing for Balzan were injured Ryan Fenech and Samir Arab, serving the first match suspension of three. On the other hand Clyde Borg and Jurgen Pisani were missing for Floriana.

As from the kick-off Balzan showed their intentions. Balzan opted to operate with Alfred Effiong as a striker and midfielders Pedro Calcado, Alan da Silva Souza and Lydon Micallef behind him. On the other hand Floriana opted to defend and operate with counterattacks.

The first chance came to Pedro Calcado when in the 7th minute his direct free kick finished scraping the crossbar.

In the 8th minute Balzan took the lead. Paul Fenech sent a perfect pass towards ALFRED EFFIONG who, after beating the Floriana’s offside trap, managed to beat goalkeeper Matthew Calleja Cremona with a low drive.

This early goal boosted Balzan and took command of the game. They could have added a second goal few moments later through Alan da Silva Souza who tried his luck with a low shot which narrowly missed the target.

Just before the break, Enrico Pepe headed just over the crossbar following a Nicolas Chiesa’s set-piece.

In the second half, Floriana came out searching for an equalizer. Their efforts were thwarted by a soft goal four minutes after the interval. Pedro Calcado picked up the ball, after Nicholas Chiesa’s mishap in a bid to control the ball with a back-heel, and passed it to ELKIN ORLANDO SERRANO VALERO who beat Calleja Cremona with a low powerful shot.

A minute later Floriana Cabral Juninho’s sent an insidious cross into a crowded box and towards Fontanella but goalkeeper Ivan Janvusevic saved without difficulty.

Balzan insisted and on the hour they could have increased the score when Calcado dribbled past a defender and served Alfred Effiong whose powerful drive finished hitting the foot of the post.

In the 70th minute, Pedro Calcado sent a curling shot from a right which finished just wide off the far post.

8 minutes from time Balzan missed another chance to score when Alan da Silva Souza released substitute Bojan Kaljevic who in turn sent an insidious cross to the far post but unmarked Aleksandar Vujacic just failed to make contact with the ball.
